Sydney Portale recorded a season-high 16 kills in each match and Lizzie Herestofa added 50 digs in the two matches but the Susquehanna University Volleyball team dropped a pair of close matches Sunday on the second day of competition at the Clarkson University Invitational in Potsdam.

Susquehanna (6-6) fell to Clarkson by a 3-1 score with set scores of 18-25, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-20. The River Hawks played a second match immediately following the loss and dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Stevens Institute. The River Hawks won the first two sets 25-17 and 26-24 but fell in the third and fourth sets 25-23 and 25-20 before the Ducks finished the match with a 15-12 win in the tiebreaker fifth set.

Against Clarkson, Portale (16) and Riley O'Dowd recorded double-digit kills and Lindsay Pugh handed out 40 assists. The defense was provided by Herestofa (27 digs), Kasey Bost (24), Pugh (12) and Megan Nelson (12) for the River Hawks.

In the Stevens match, Portale led the offense again with her second consecutive 16-kill match while Brooke Lacesa added 14 kills, Hannah Lyons added 12 and O'Dowd had 10. Pugh had a career-high 55 assists and added 17 digs while Caroline Beohm (25), Herestofa (23) and Bost (20) all had at least 20 digs each.

The River Hawks return to campus and will play next in the home opener Friday and Saturday with the Hampton Inn River Hawks Classic as Susquehanna faces Rochester, Frostburg and Messiah over the weekend in Houts Gymnasium.
