Matt Ellingworth had three saves and the defense held strong for over 75 minutes while the team had a 9-4 corner kick advantage but the Susquehanna University Men's Soccer team was unable to score and dropped a 1-0 decision against Wilkes University in a defensive struggle Wednesday evening at Sassafras Field.
The River Hawks (1-5-1) played tough with the Colonels in the first half, creating numerous scoring opportunities early but the score remained tied after the first 45 minutes of play. Wilkes (3-2-1) held the slight shooting advantage at the half, but their scoring chances were not as dangerous as the team's shots were from long distance.
The story remained the same early in the second half, but the Colonels were able to switch momentum late in the half and create a few scoring chances. They capitalized on one of their chances in the 79
th minute on a cross into the box that was tucked away on a volley.
Susquehanna created several set piece scoring opportunities, as they held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks and were fouled nine times in the game.
