Emily Sullivan scored her first goal of the season as she converted a penalty kick with 27 minutes left to play to propel the Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team to a 1-0 victory Wednesday night over Wilkes University in a non-conference matchup at Schmidt Stadium in Edwardsville.
Susquehanna (5-1-1) used momentum from a pair of defensive plays to move the ball up the field. Anna Werner fired a shot off the crossbar and a foul was called on Wilkes in the box during the play that resulted in the penalty kick awarded to the River Hawks.
Sullivan buried the penalty shot which ended up being the lone goal of the game.
Wilkes (2-3-0) had been applying pressure on the Susquehanna defense and Madison Welliver came up with a big save before a second shot was stopped by defender Samantha Chillis. Just 30 seconds later, the River Hawks were applying the pressure that resulted in the penalty kick.
Welliver was credited with six saves and Wilkes was awarded three corner kicks compared to zero for Susquehanna.
The River Hawks open Landmark Conference play Saturday hosting Elizabethtown at 4 p.m. on Sassafras Field.
