Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Takes Down Elizabethtown in Landmark Conference Opener

Anna Werner scored the team's first goal early in the second half and Emily Sullivan and Kate Cantrell combined for a highlight reel goal in the closing minutes as the Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team ran away with a 2-0 victory over Elizabethtown College Saturday afternoon at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.

The River Hawks (6-1-1) got off to a slower start, playing even with and sometimes being out possessed by the Blue Jays (2-3-2).

Having been a staple all season, the stellar Susquehanna defense was able to keep Elizabethtown off the board before making adjustments at halftime.

With the game tied at zero, the River Hawks immediately created positive momentum to start off the second half with Werner almost single-handedly creating several scoring chances. She was finally able to put a goal in the net in the 52nd minute on a shot from outside the box to give the team a lead.

Continuing to now dominate possession, the River Hawks scored again late to put away the victory. Julia Hutsko dribbled from the right side into the middle of the field and fed the ball to Cantrell who sent a one-time pass over to Sullivan. Sullivan fired a shot from deep that found the upper left corner of the goal for a spectacular goal.

The goal cemented a 2-0 win for the River Hawks. The defense recorded its sixth shutout of the year in eight games played. Madison Welliver recorded two saves in net.

The River Hawks look to continue their successful run Tuesday when they take on Delaware Valley at 7 p.m. in Selinsgrove.
