Madison Welliver and the stingy back line held another team scoreless as the Susquehanna University Women's Soccer Team won its sixth straight game as it defeated Delaware Valley 2-0 Tuesday evening at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.
The River Hawks (7-1-1) knocked on the door all game, out shooting the Aggies (3-5) 27-2, including 18-0 in the second half.
Pettit got the scoring started less than five minutes into the game. On a loose ball in the box, Pettit tried to head the ball into the net but a defensive save was made by Delaware Valley. The ball rebounded right to her feet and she was able to flip the ball past the keeper to give Susquehanna the early lead.
Although the team created several more scoring chances in the half, the score remained the same until early in the second half when Pettit scored again, this time from distance. Off a deflected shot, the ball found her feet well above the top of the box and she was able to drill a shot into the upper left corner of the goal.
The defense held the Aggies in check for the remainder of the game, with the offense controlling the ball and consistently holding it on its half of the field to cement the 2-0 win.
The shutout marks several different milestones for the River Hawks. This is the team's fifth consecutive shutout and a goal has not been relinquished in 485 minutes and 13 seconds, which is a program record. This is also the sixth straight win for the River Hawks, which ties a program record (also reached in 2003 and 2017).
Susquehanna continues Landmark Conference play Saturday when it takes on Moravian at 4 p.m. in Bethlehem.
