Susquehanna Downs Gettysburg

Hannah Lyons delivered 18 kills, Sydney Portale added 14 kills, and Lindsey Pugh had 43 assists for the Susquehanna University Volleyball team as it defeated Gettysburg College in four sets Wednesday evening in the Garret Center Field House in Selinsgrove.

The River Hawks (10-6) dropped the first set 25-20 before taking the final three sets 25-19, 25-16, and 25-22. 

In the first set, the Bullets (12-2)were able to take the lead early before the River Hawks came back and tied it up at 17. Gettysburg then went on a late run to take the first set.

Susquehanna was able to get off to a hot start of their own in the second set, leading by as much as eight points on three separate occasions. Fending off a late run by the Bullets, the team was able to pull out a 25-19 win and tie the match up at one set apiece.

The third set consisted of an early run by the Bullets, followed by an extended run by the River Hawks who prevailed 25-16. Portale had seven kills and Lyons added five kills in the set.

The final set was a back and forth affair that had eight lead changes. Trailing 17-14, Lyons took over and recorded three straight kills for the River Hawks. Still trailing 20-19, the team was able to score six of the final eight points to cement the 25-22 victory as the team won on a Bullet service error.

Lyons had a resounding .556 kill percentage for the game and her 18 kills is a career high. Lizzie Herestofa added 20 digs and four other River Hawks added 10 digs or more.

Susquehanna continues Landmark Conference play Saturday when they take on Juniata and Catholic. Game times are set for 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.
