Box Score In a game in which both teams had extended periods of dominant possession control, defenses held their ground and the Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team was unable to capitalize on a strong second half and overtime period in a 0-0 draw against Muhlenberg College Saturday evening at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.
The River Hawks started out the first half strong with possession, but were unable to create any legitimate goal scoring opportunities early on.
After the opening twenty minutes of play, the Mules closed out the first half strong, out shooting Susquehanna 4-1 before the River Hawks shot the ball twice in the closing five minutes of the half.
Muhlenberg continued their strong play to start the second half, but Susquehanna quickly shifted momentum ten minutes into the half and continued to pressure the Mules for the remainder of the game.
Seniors Emily Sullivan and Kate Cantrell pressured the defense and the River Hawks had a few opportunities to break the scoreless tie in the final minutes. Their biggest opportunity came in the 81stminute when a cross was sent into the box over the Muhlenberg keepers' hands, momentarily leaving an empty net. The ball found the feet of Cantrell but the Mules had enough bodies in the box to alter the incoming shot wide of the net.
The overtime period was more of an up and down affair in which Susquehanna continued to control the possession battle but had a limited number of goal scoring opportunities.
After being outshot 4-3 in the first half, the River Hawks went on to outshoot the Mules 11-1 over the closing 65 minutes of play. Emily Sullivan led the team with five shots.
Susquehanna continues their non-conference schedule when they travel to No. 20 Misericordia on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
