Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Uses Overtime to Defeat Penn State Harrisburg

Senior forward Kate Cantrell scored a goal just under eight minutes into the first overtime period on a feed from Marley Clendenin and Anna Werner added the equalizing goal that sent the game into that overtime period on an assist from Emily Sullivan as the Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team defeated Penn State Harrisburg 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.

The River Hawks (2-1-1) outshot the Lions (1-3) eight to six in the opening half and several of the goal scoring opportunities were from close range, but Lions goalkeeper Kayla Arnold was able to make key stops for her team and keep the game at a 0-0 tie going into halftime.

Momentum started to shift for the Lions and they took control of possession in the early stages of the second half, including a goal in the 63rd minute to take a 1-0 lead.

The River Hawks were finally able to get on the board in the 81st minute when Werner carried the ball down the left side of the field and fired a shot into the upper right corner of the net.

That seemed to spark Susquehanna as they continued to fire on all cylinders for the remainder of the second half as the team created several more scoring opportunities in the final minutes.

The River Hawks continued their strong play in overtime, capitalizing in the closing minutes of the first overtime period. The ball found the feet of Cantrell on a long ball sent in from Clendenin and Cantrell was able to weave through several defenders before neatly tucking away the finish.

Susquehanna outshot Penn State Harrisburg 22-14. Madison Welliver had 12 saves in net.

The River Hawks look to continue their positive momentum when they take on Kings College Wednesday at 5 P.M. in Wilkes-Barre.
