Volleyball Drops Close Matches to Ranked Teams

The Susquehanna University Volleyball Team dropped a pair of matches Saturday afternoon on the second day of competition at the Ithaca College Invitational but the losses came against No. 7 ranked Ithaca and perennial ranked team Wesleyan (Conn.).

The River Hawks (4-4) fell to Wesleyan in five sets to start the day. Wesleyan won the first two sets by scores of 25-14 and 25-18 but Susquehanna rebounded to win the third and fourth sets by identical 25-23 scores before Wesleyan rebounded to score a 15-12 win in the tie breaker set.

Against Ithaca, the River Hawks lost 25-15 to open the match and then dropped a close 26-24 decision in the second set before winning a 25-16 set. The Bombers finished the match with a 25-22 decision in the fourth set.

On the day, Hannah Lyons recorded 21 kills and eight blocks while Sydney Portale led the team with 27 kills. Riley O'Dowd had 25 kills and Lindsay Pugh handed out 82 assists including 50 against Wesleyan and also led the team with 37 digs and five aces.

Lizzie Herestofa had 37 digs, Kasey Bost had 28 and Caroline Beohm added 26 for the River Hawks.

Susquehanna will face SUNY Brockport, Clarkson, SUNY Potsdam and Stevens next weekend at the Clarkson Invitational in Potsdam.
