Susquehanna Women's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker in OT

Selinsgrove, Pa. – Four starters in double figures was not enough to propel the Susquehanna University women's basketball team to their third straight win Saturday afternoon. Susquehanna (5-9, 2-2 LC) dropped an 82-74 Landmark Conference decision in overtime to the visiting Elizabethtown College Blue Jays (9-5, 2-2 LC).

Susquehanna 74, Elizabethtown 82 (OT)

How It Happened
  • Lydia Lawson tallied the final six points of regulation for Elizabethtown to give the visitors a one-possession lead with 46 seconds on the clock. Sophomore Madi Welliver (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) then knocked down a pair of free throws with 19 ticks left to even up the game at 67-67.
  • Lawson had an opportunity to potentially win it in regulation but missed a pair of free throws with 3.7 seconds to go. Welliver grabbed the defensive board but the River Hawks' last-second attempt hit off the side of the backboard and the game went into overtime.
  • In the extra frame, it was the Lawson show as she scored all but two of the Blue Jays' 15 points in OT. Lawson went 7-of-9 from the free throw line as well as 3-of-3 from the field in the extra five minutes. E-town also benefitted from five points off of four SU turnovers.
  • The game featured six lead changes and four tied scores but Susquehanna controlled the tempo for the first three quarters.
  • The River Hawks erased a seven-point deficit in the first period, outscoring Elizabethtown, 14-6, over the final five minutes to stake a 23-19 lead on a triple by freshman guard Sadie Comfort (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) in the waning moments of the quarter.
  • The Blue Jays opened up the second stanza with a 9-2 run to regain the lead but Susquehanna responded with a run of its own, notching 14 of the next 16 points to retake a 39-30 advantage at halftime.
  • SU did not score for the first six minutes of the third frame, allowing E-town to right back in it and usurp the lead once again. Freshman forward Olivia Brandt (Bethlehem, Pa./Notre Dame) ended the drought for the River Hawks with a 1-of-2 effort at the line. EC led by six in the final three minutes of the quarter before Welliver and Comfort close the gap to two.
  • Welliver gave Susquehanna a six-point lead at 6:36 of the fourth before the Blue Jays knotted it at 58-58. Sophomore guard Nevin Hoenninger's (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) layup then helped build the lead back up to five with 3:05 remaining in regulation.
