Selinsgrove, Pa. – The Susquehanna University women's basketball team gave No. 3/4 University of Scranton a run for its money Wednesday night. Susquehanna (5-10, 2-3 LC) dropped a tight 58-45 decision to undefeated Scranton (16-0, 5-0 LC) in Landmark Conference action.
Susquehanna 45, Scranton 58
How It Happened
- Scranton may have scored the first bucket of the game but it was the River Hawks who jumped out to an 8-2 advantage behind a pair of three-pointers from guards Erin McQuillen (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) and Sadie Comfort (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville). A McQuillen layup kept SU's edge at six with 5:37 left. Danielle McCurdy cut the deficit to 12-10 at less than two minutes later both teams went cold and Susquehanna headed into the second quarter with the two-point margin.
- After being held to 0-of-7 shooting from downtown, the Royals used two triples early in the period to regain their first lead since the game's opening basket. Back-to-back layups by Emily Sheehan gave Scranton a 22-16 lead at 5:19 which would keep until halftime as the offense for both sides went quiet once again.
- The River Hawks rallied in the third frame as SU notched the first two scores to pull within 22-20. Scranton responded by stretching its lead to eight on a Sofia Recupero layup at 6:11. Five straight points by Comfort closed the gap to three and then a minute later, a pair of McQuillen foul shots maintained a three-point margin at 2:07. The visitors headed into the fourth with a 36-29 advantage following a 6-2 run on the strength of two three-point shots.
- Foul calls were 8-2 in favor of Scranton in the fourth and so the Royals used an 8-of-12 effort at the line plus two key triples early on to establish a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
