Connolly Drops 18 as River Hawk Women’s Basketball Falls to Moravian

Selinsgrove, Pa. – Sophomore forward Alanna Connolly (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon) poured in a career-best 18 points Wednesday night but the effort short in the fourth straight loss for the Susquehanna University women's basketball team. Susquehanna (5-12, 2-5 LC) suffered an 87-68 setback at the hands of the Moravian College Greyhounds (12-6, 4-3 LC).

How It Happened

  • The River Hawks never owned an advantage the entire game and tied it up just once early in the first quarter. Moravian would average 21.75 points per period, shooting 53.2-percent from the field for the game.
  • Connolly twice pulled Susquehanna within two in the first 10 minutes of the contest but the Greyhounds stretched the lead to eight with an 8-2 run in just over three minutes. Moravian headed into the second quarter with a 23-17 advantage after shooting a blistering 66.7-percent from the floor.
  • A 7-0 run to start the second frame gave the Hounds a double-digit margin that only dipped once into single digits when Connolly converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 4:44 remaining in the first half.
  • Susquehanna was only outscored 21-18 in the third quarter as Connolly and freshman guard Amanda Lemire (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton) each tallied six in the stanza.
  • The fourth period was deadlocked at 21 points apiece as sophomores Erin McQuillen (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) and Nevin Hoenninger (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) combined for nine points to lead the River Hawks over the final 10 minutes. SU also grabbed a 9-8 edge in the boards.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Connolly connected on her first eight shots of the night before finishing 8-of-9 for her career-high 18 points. She also added two assists, two rebounds and a block.
  • McQuillen contributed 13 points and team-bests of eight boards and five assists while Lemire chipped in 11 points, two helpers, a carom, and a steal.
  • The River Hawks received 20 points from their bench players, including six points each from freshmen Sadie Comfort (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) and Olivia Brandt (Bethlehem, Pa./Notre Dame).
  • The trio of Maddie Capuano (32 points), Nadine Ewald (24 points), and Emily Walls (11 points) combined for 67 points in Moravian's second straight win while Karlie Brogan hauled in 12 boards to help the Greyhounds post a 42-32 rebounding margin.
