Selinsgrove, Pa. – Sophomore guard
Erin McQuillen (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) tallied a career-best 23 points Thursday night in the first game of the New Year for the Susquehanna University women's basketball team. Susquehanna (3-8) battled all night long but came up short in a 75-69 non-conference loss to King's (Pa.) College (7-5).
Susquehanna 69, King's 75
How It Happened
- King's jumped out to a 7-0 lead but sophomore guard Nevin Hoenninger (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) put the River Hawks right back in it, scoring the team's first six points to trim the deficit to 10-6 at 5:37. The Monarchs would outscore SU, 8-6, the rest of the way to stake an 18-12 lead after one.
- The Monarchs heated up from downtown in the second period, knocking down 5-of-6 three-pointers to head into halftime with a 43-29 advantage.
- Susquehanna's defense came out strong in the third as the River Hawks limited King's to just one field goal and seven points plus forcing them into five turnovers. SU also stepped up its offense, going 6-of-15 from the field with four three-pointers to close the gap to 50-49 after 30 minutes of action. Freshman guard Sadie Comfort (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) was clutch, coming off the bench to drain three triples and fuel the River Hawks' strong third frame.
- A pair of free throws by sophomore forward Alanna Connolly (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon) gave Susquehanna its first lead of the game 22 seconds into the fourth. The 51-50 SU lead was short-lived as the Monarchs responded with a 19-8 run to boast a 10-point lead with 3:22 on the clock. King's went 10-of-13 from the free throw over the final eight minutes to seal the win.
