River Hawk Rowing Returns to the Schuylkill

Susquehanna Crew returned to the Schuylkill river on Saturday, October 26th for the annual Head of the Schuylkill regatta. With a total of 2,058 entries and over 100 events, this regatta is one of the largest races in the region. 

To start the day, the Varsity men's pair finished sixth out of six boats, with a time of 17:05. Liam Bishop and Ben Horine saw an improvement of 19 seconds from their last race on the Schuylkill. 

The Men's Novice Four were next to go, finishing with a time of 17:49. They beat their time from the Navy Day Regatta by nearly one minute, finishing in 13th place out of a total of 16 boats. Washington College fell behind them in 14th, The College of New Jersey in 15th and Canisius College in 16th place. Rowers in this boat were Joseph McKee, Robert Hyer, Nicolas Summers, and Arata Fujikawa, and they were coxed by Novice Jordan De Leon.

Next up, the Women's Novice Four rowed a strong race with a finish of 20:33, also an improvement of nearly a minute from last race. They finished in 18th place out of 23 competitors. Behind them were boats from Haverford College, New York University, Maryland, and Stockton University. The members of this crew were Madi Freed, Maia Hunter, Sophia Zurlo, and Rio Malarkey, and they were coxed by varsity member Sophia Williams.

The Men's Varsity Four finished in 40th place out of 40 boats, with a time of 19:50, after being given a one minute penalty on the race course. Members of this crew included Mike Avellino, Evan Komorowski, Alex Waxman and Justin Calabrese. They were coxed by varsity member Ben Horine, who stood in for coxswain Matt Cassini who could not attend the race. 

The Women's Varsity four finished with an impressive 40th out of 48 with a time of 18:00, chopping off fourteen seconds from their last finish. They were able to hold of boats from Maryland, Cabrini University, Stockton University, Franklin and Marshall, The College of New Jersey, Haverford College, Nazareth, and Maryland B. 

To finish off the day, the Women's Varsity 8 came in 34th out of 38 boats with a time of 16:41. They were able to beat Hamilton B, Stockton B, St. John Fisher, and Cabrini University. The boat lineup included Nicole Grace, Nora Moran, Alexis Rich, Kristina Palmisano, Halle Minner, Carolyn Muench, Rose Wetzel and Audrey Crandall, respectively. They were coxed by varsity member Sami Koitz

The team will be competing again next weekend at the Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax Station, Virginia. This will be the third race out of four total for the Fall 5k season.
