2K Racing at Nittany Lion Chase Concludes Fall Season

On Sunday, November 10th, Penn State crew hosted teams from La Salle, Bucknell, and Susquehanna Universities to participate in the annual Nittany Lion Chase. This race serves as an unofficial end of the fall season for the teams, and allows the crews to practice a 2k race on the water before indoor winter conditioning begins. It was held at Bald Eagle State Park, and racing began at 10:00am and ran into the afternoon, with a short break for lunch in between.
First to race were the Men's Varsity Pair, Liam Bishop and Ben Horine. They went up against a lineup of Bucknell boats, all the way from A to F. They finished in 7th with a time of 16:09.4.
The second race of the day was the Women's Varsity Pair, in their first race of the season. They battled it out with a Penn State boat, coming in a close second with a time of 10:11.6. Nicole Grace sat in the stern of the boat, and Kristina Palmisano was bow.
The Women's Varsity four raced with a different lineup, having varsity member Halle Minner sit in 2 seat. They were coxed by novice coxswain Jordan De Leon, who took the place of Edward Nestor. They finished with a recorded time of 9:49.6, which put them in 4th place out of five boats. Other members of this crew besides those already mentioned include Bailey Auchey, Anna Chobanoff and Morgan Stimson
The Men's Novice Four raced against two Bucknell boats, along with a boat from La Salle and Penn State. With this stark competition, they finished in 5th place with a time of 12:36.0. Nicolas Summers sat in the stroke seat, with Rob Hyer behind him, replacement Edward Nestor in two seat, and Arata Fujikawa sitting in the bow of the boat. Former stroke seat Joseph McKee coxed their boat as opposed to rowing due to an ongoing knee injury that he hopes to remedy before the upcoming season.
The final race of the afternoon was the Women's Varsity eight boat. They finished with a time of 8:47.1, behind La Salle A, La Salle B, and a Penn State boat. By this time in the afternoon, the winds had really started to pick up, making for rough waters and cold temperatures. The members of this crew were Nicole Grace, Nora Moran, Alexis Rich, Kristina Palmisano, Halle Minner, Rose Wetzel and Audrey Crandall. They were coxed by Sami Koitz. This was the second race of the day for Grace, Palmisano and Minner.
This race concludes the fall season for the team. Come January, they will spend the beginning portion of the second semester in winter training. They will be using the erg machines to get in shape for the 2k sprint season that will begin in March, after Spring Break in Deland, Florida. Races for the upcoming season will be decided by the beginning of the spring semester.
