Susquehanna Women’s Basketball Takes Down Juniata in Landmark Opener

Box Score HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Junior captain Erin McQuillen (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) poured in a season-best 22 points to lead the Susquehanna University women's basketball team to a road win in the first Landmark Conference game of the 2019-20 season. Susquehanna (6-1, 1-0 LC) posted a 78-69 victory over the host Juniata College Eagles (2-5, 0-1 LC) for its sixth win in a row.
 
Today's triumph snaps a four-game skid for the River Hawks against Juniata as Susquehanna's last win over the Eagles was a 72-56 decision on February 1, 2017 in Huntingdon.
 
Prior to this season's 6-1, Susquehanna lost just one game in its first seven games five times in the past 19 seasons (2002-03, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2008-09, and 2016-17).

How It Happened
First Quarter
  • Juniata jumped out to a 5-0 lead as Gracie Stauffer scored all five points for the Eagles and SU missed its first two shots and turned the ball over twice.
  • McQuillen ended the scoreless drought for the River Hawks with a layup at 6:54 and then back-to-back three-pointers by McQuillen gave her team their first lead of the game before assisting on first-year forward Isabella Schwabe's (Hazleton, Pa./Marian Catholic) to cap off Susquehanna's 17-5 run at 1:58.
  • After Cassie Mock went 1-of-2 at the line, SU closed out the first quarter with four straight points to stake a 21-13 advantage.
 
Second Quarter
  • The River Hawks doubled their lead to 16 on three different occasions in the second frame before taking a 40-26 advantage into halftime.
  • Susquehanna capitalized on an 11-for-12 effort at the free throw line to create distance between themselves and Juniata.
 
Third Quarter
  • The Eagles edged Susquehanna, 17-16, in the third period as the Eagles shot nearly 40-percent from the field, including 3-of-7 from downtown.
  • Juniata's defense forced the River Hawks into nine miscues while only committing three turnovers.
  • SU grew its lead to 18 with a 4-0 start to the second half before the hosts closed the gap to 10 twice in the final two minutes.
  • McQuillen sent the River Hawks into the fourth with a 56-43 lead thanks to her third triple of the game.
 
Fourth Quarter
  • Susquehanna stretched its lead to 17 twice in the fourth quarter, including 64-47 at 6:53, before the Eagles rallied with a 14-4 run to cut the deficit to 68-61 with 3:08 remaining thanks to eight points from Jamie Mahigel.
  • Sophomore guard Sadie Comfort (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) went 7-of-8 down the stretch at the charity stripe to keep Juniata at bay.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Susquehanna went to the line a season-high 33 times and made a season-best 28 free throws for a .848 free throw percentage.
  • The River Hawks posted a +12 rebounding margin as SU outrebounded the Eagles, 42-30, including a 34-23 margin on defensive boards.
  • Juniata forced the visitors into a season-high 20 turnovers for 21 points as the Eagles came up with 10 steals.

  • McQuillen finished one point shy of her career-high as she was 5-of-12 from the field with three triples and 9-of-10 from the line. She added six rebounds, three steals, three assists, and a steal.
  • Schwabe came off the bench to tally a season-best 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting while hauling in a season-high seven boards.
  • Junior guard Nevin Hoenninger (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) contributed 11 points, eight caroms, and five assists while Comfort finished the game with 10 points off the bench.
  • Senior captain Rachel Sweger (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) matched her career-high of nine rebounds plus added eight points and two blocks.
  • Stauffer led all players with a double-double on 14 points and 12 boards while Madison Colyer and Mahigel each notched 10 points.
