Susquehanna Men's Lacrosse Doubles Up King's (Pa.) as Dick Scores Four

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – The Susquehanna University men's lacrosse team moved to 2-0 on the young 2019 season as sophomore attackman Colton Dick (Owings, Md./Northern) put up six points Saturday afternoon. Susquehanna (2-0) posted a 12-6 non-conference win over the King's (Pa.) College Monarchs (0-3).

How It Happened
  • Susquehanna had trouble early on trying to get one past Matt Basile until senior midfielder Erik Lanyi (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) broke the scoreless draw with his first tally of the season at 5:42. Dick picked up his first of the afternoon with eight seconds left in the first period for a 2-0 SU lead.
  • Jared Gambino put the Monarchs on the board 44 seconds into the second quarter before Susquehanna notched three unanswered from, including back-to-back goals from Dick. Gabe Vansuch stopped the run with his fifth of the season before Dick struck again with under two minutes remaining in the half to send the River Hawks into halftime with a 6-2 advantage.
  • The River Hawks netted the first score of the third frame off the stick of senior attackman Jack Donnelly (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) for a five-goal cushion. However, King's responded with three straight to cut the lead to 7-5 with 8:45 to go in the third. Vansuch scored twice in the run while Charlie Alessi assisted on two goals. SU's two-goal lead would stand for the rest of the third.
  • Susquehanna came alive in the final period as the River Hawks unleashed five consecutive goals in a span of just over eight minutes to boast a 12-5 lead with 3:16 left in the game. Senior midfielder Jack Gerrity (Scotch Plains-Fanwood, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) picked up his first two goals of the season in the 5-0 SU run.

  • The River Hawks outshot King's, 43-32, and also controlled ground balls, 42-34, as senior midfielder Joshua Wesolowski (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket Regional) matched a career-high with a game-best six loose ball pickups while senior captain James Abramo (Millstone, N.J./Allentown) added five.
  • The SU defense caused 12 of the Monarchs' 20 turnovers as senior captain Dan Murphy (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and junior long-stick midfielder Jacob Fox (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) each came up with three caused turnovers. Susquehanna also killed all three of the Monarchs' extra-man opportunities.
  • King's edged the River Hawks in face-offs, winning 12-of-22. Senior midfielder Joe Acquaviva (Wyckoff, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) went 9-of-16 at the X with four ground balls.
 
Top Performers
  • Dick finished with season-highs of four goals and two assists while picking up a career-best four ground balls.
  • Donnelly tallied season-bests of two goals and three points as he assisted on Dick's second goal of the day, a man-up goal in the second quarter.
  • Gerrity put up his first multiple-goal game of his career as he finished with a pair on three shots.
  • Senior captain Dylan Abplanalp (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) turned away eight shots in staying undefeated between the pipes.
  • Vansuch led the Monarchs with a hat trick while Alessi tallied four points on a goal and three assists. Trevor Douenais went 12-of-22 in face-offs with six ground balls while Basile finished with 14 saves.
