Baseball Falls in Nail-Biter to No. 5 Swarthmore

Six River Hawks had multi-hit games with Nick Berger leading the way with a 3-for-6 day, but the Susquehanna University Baseball team came up a little short in a thrilling game against No. 5 Swarthmore Tuesday afternoon in Punta Gorda, Florida. The Garnet pulled out an 11-8 win.

How It Happened

  • The River Hawks (1-5), drew first blood in the top half of the second inning, as Ben Burman drove home Steve Lorenz on an RBI single followed by two productive outs by Justin Miller (RBI groundout) and Craig Roumes (sacrifice fly).
  • The Garnet (5-2) answered with a three spot of their own, and tacked on a fourth run in the third inning to take the lead. They also scored twice in the fourth inning to increase the advantage to 6-3.
  • Peter Yarem and Berger each had RBI hits sandwiched around a run for Swarthmore over the middle innings to creep to within 7-5, but the Garnet scored three runs in the seventh to extend it to 10-5.
  • With their backs against the wall, the River Hawks continued to pressure Swarthmore, putting runners in scoring position in every inning. In the eighth, Steve Lorenz drove home Craig Roumes and Yarem knocked an RBI single to drive in Alex Burman before the side was retired.
  • Trailing 11-7 in the ninth, Susquehanna loaded the bases with no one out, but only managed one run in the inning as the Garnet made some key plays to get out of the inning and escape with a win.

Inside the Box Score

  • The River Hawk bats continue to sizzle, as they roped 15 hits on the afternoon. Berger led the way with a three-hit day.
  • Justin Miller, Burman, Lorenz, Yarem and Anthony Dombrowski all had multi-hit games as well.
  • Luke Tuttle threw a clean inning on the mound and Will Carey surrendered one run in relief on the bump for Susquehanna. The pitching staff only had three walks on the day.
  • Charles Levitt had four hits for Swarthmore, who defeated the No. 1 nationally ranked team in the country in Wooster earlier this week.

Up Next for the River Hawks

  • The River Hawks will now take on Scranton in a three game set to open Landmark play. The teams will play a double-header on Friday and a single game on Saturday to close out the trip. First game of the double-header begins at 1 p.m
