Burman Homers, Yarem Has Big Day as Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Scranton

Ben Burman hit a lazer over the left field fence and Peter Yarem went 2-for-4 with four RBI in game two as the Susquehanna University Baseball team bounced back from an extra innings loss in game one to split a doubleheader with Landmark Conference foe Scranton. The Royals took game one 12-7 in ten innings and the River Hawks ran away with a 17-4 victory in game two.

How It Happened

  • Susquehanna (2-6 Overall, 1-1 Landmark) took an early 4-1 lead in game one on RBI by Nick Berger Steve Lorenz, Yarem and Ben Burman  to take a commanding lead. Scranton (3-6, 1-1) would claw their way back, scoring single runs in four of the first five innings, but a Craig Roumes sacrifice fly to score Justin Miller and a run scored by Chris Corrado maintained a 6-4 edge.
  • The Royals would score three runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-6 lead before a Yarem sacrifice fly sent the game to extra innings after the seventh. The game remained tied until the tenth inning before Scranton blew this one open with a five spot and defeated Susquehanna, 12-7.
  • Game two saw some early adversity for the River Hawks, but the bats put Scranton away. The Royals scored three runs on starter Ryan Monroy in the first, but 2 RBI hits by Lance Welsh and Yarem gave the team a 4-3 lead.
  • The hits would keep on coming and Susquehanna had ten runs after two innings. Burman hit a shot over the left field fence to cap off the strong run.
  • The River Hawks would tack on several runs late and Monroy settled down nicely to get the complete game victory with 17 runs of support. The final was 17-4.

Inside the Box Score

  • On his birthday, Yarem went 4-for-7 on the afternoon with six RBI. He had a triple and two sacrifice flies, coming up big with runners in scoring position.
  • The team mashed 22 hits in game two, with Roumes, Anthony Dombrowski, Alex Burman, Welsh, Yarem Ben Burman and Corrado allrecording multi-hit games.
  • Nick Berger, Steve Lorenz and Justin Miller had multi-hit games in game one.
  • Freshman Monroy showed poise and composure after a rough first inning in game two to come away with a much-needed complete game victory. His efforts helped save the bullpen arms for the rubber game of the series.
