10 Strikeouts from Murphy Leads Susquehanna Softball to Split in Florida

Kissimmee, Fla. – Freshman Katie Murphy (Havre de Grace, Md./C. Milton Wright) threw a season-best 10 strikeouts in notching her first collegiate win and leading the Susquehanna University softball team to a split on Wednesday at The Spring Games in Florida. Susquehanna (4-5) dropped a 7-3 decision to No. 18 Kean University (12-1) before bouncing back with a 3-1 win over Keene State College (2-4).

How It Happened
  • Kean posted a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Caroline Ratti came home on Jacqueline Riley's single down the right field line while Julie Raba scored on the same play following an SU throwing error. A forced out at second and a ground out to third ended opening inning.
  • The River Hawks responded with two runs of their own in the top of the second behind sophomore infielder Brittany Hebda's (Kingston, Pa./Holy Redeemer) one-out, two-run homer to left field. Senior outfielder Jill Ahrens (Clarence, N.Y./Sacred Heart), the No. 5 hitter, crossed home plate on the play after hitting a leadoff single.
  • After being silenced in the second, the nationally-ranked Cougars answered back with three runs in third to stake a 5-2 advantage. Raba highlighted the inning with a two-run double down the left field line while Raba crossed home plate for the second time on a ground out to the shortstop.
  • KU tacked on two more runs in the fourth to stretch its lead to five behind an RBI single by Olivia Zengel and a Raba sacrifice fly.
  • Freshman infielder Kiara Bryant (Allentown, Pa./Parkland), the No. 2 hitter, plated the River Hawks final run of the day in the fifth as Bryant came home on a Kean error after leading off with an infield single.
  • Senior captain Alexa Gonzalez (Northport, N.Y./Northport) retired the final six Cougar batters in order to hold Kean to the 7-3 margin.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • The River Hawks came up with three runs on seven hits, including a two-run home run, while committing only one error.
  • Kean committed four errors while scoring seven runs on seven hits, including a pair of doubles, and stealing two bases.
 
Top Performers
  • Bryant led SU at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort and a run scored while Hebda drove in two runs and scored one.
  • Sophomore Brooke Wiarda (Green Pond, N.J./Morris Knolls) took the loss as Wiarda (0-2) gave up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with a season-best three strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Gonzalez threw 2.2 hitless and scoreless innings of relief.
  • Taryn DiGiacomo improved to 7-1 on the season for Kean as DiGiacomo fanned four batters and allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits in the complete game win. Zengel finished 2-for-3 at the plate while Raba notched three RBI and two runs scored.

How It Happened
  • Susquehanna jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Bryant, the three-hole hitter, continued her solid performance at the plate by driving in junior outfielder Emily Lear (Elmira, N.Y./Thomas Edison) with a one-out single to right field. Lear drew a walk and then stole second before scoring.
  • Murphy sat down the first nine Owl batters with six strikeouts while Molly St. Germain held the River Hawks scoreless for the next three innings, striking out five and giving up just one hit.
  • SU struck again in the fifth as an error-laden inning allowed sophomore outfielder Katherine Fahsbender (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) and junior catcher Amanda Robinson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) to cross home plate and triple the River Hawk lead to 3-0.
  • Keene State avoided the shutout loss in the top of the sixth as Cassie Woods scored on St. Germain's single to left field. Woods drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a sacrifice hit and advanced to third on Kylie Frank's single. A fly out and Murphy's ninth strikeout ended the inning.
  • It was three up, three down for both teams in their final at-bats as Susquehanna came away with its fourth win of the season.

  • Susquehanna made no errors on the day while notching three runs on three hits.
  • The Owls tallied one run on four hits while committing four errors in the fifth inning.
 
Top Performers
  • Sophomore Michelle Principe (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) and Robinson each went 1-for-2 while Bryant finished 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
  • Murphy (1-1) earned the complete game win as she fanned 10 batters against one walk and allowed one earned run on four hits.
  • Four different Keene State players made contact on the day. St. Germain (1-2) struck out seven with just one walk and also went 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Owls.
