Baseball Drops Home Contest to Penn State Harrisburg

Nathan Madden and Will Carey had strong outings on the mound and three River Hawks had multi-hit games, but the Susquehanna University baseball team relinquished several late runs in what was a very tight game for six innings and fell 13-2 at the hands of Penn State Harrisburg Wednesday afternoon in Selinsgrove.

How It Happened
  • The Lions (11-2-1) scored a single run in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. The River Hawks (2-7) threatened to score in those innings but were unable to score.
  • The middle innings saw Nate Madden and Will Carey put together strong performances, as they each threw two innings of shutout ball. Susquehanna got on base three times in those innings, but never really threatened to score until the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • After a Peter Yarem double, Ben Burman and Justin Miller each had productive outs to send home Yarem to cut the lead in half. In need of a shut-down inning in the seventh to keep the pressure on, the Lions had other plans to spoil the River Hawk run. A three-run home run and three more runs in the inning brought the lead to 8-1.
  • Penn State Harrisburg would add five more runs in the eighth and ninth innings to take a 13-1 lead into the ninth. A Nick Berger RBI in the ninth would not be enough and the River Hawks fell, 13-2.
Inside the Box Score
  • Yarem, Alex Burman and Berger each had two hits for Susquehanna. Burman reached base four times, as he added two walks.
  • Madden shined in his season debut, getting out of jams in both innings he pitched. He impressed with sharp off speed pitches and recorded three strikeouts.
  • Carey worked very economically through his innings, throwing just 24 pitches and allowing only one base runner.
Up Next for the River Hawks
  • Susquehanna heads to Washington D.C. for a three-game set with Catholic. Game one starts at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
