Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader, Series from Defending Landmark Champion Catholic

Nick Berger hit a go-ahead RBI single in game one while Chris Corrado went 4-for-4 in game two and Justin Miller added a three-run double as the Susquehanna University Baseball team defeated Catholic 5-3, 17-2 in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader in Washington D.C. The team also took game one of the series on Saturday.

How It Happened
  • In game one, neither team scored a run until the third inning, when the River Hawks (5-7 Overall, 4-1 Landmark) got on the board first. Peter Yarem drove home Miller on an RBI single and Nick Berger tacked on another run, advancing home on a throw that nabbed Yarem at second base.
  • The Cardinals (9-7, 2-4) pushed across an unearned run against starter Tyson Thrush in the fourth inning to cut the lead in half, but a run scored by Anthony Dombrowski in the team's following turn at-bat quickly gave Susquehanna a two-run advantage.
  • Catholic proceeded to score twice in the fifth inning to tie the score, and the game that was originally scheduled to be a seven-inning affair, needed some extra innings to determine a victor.
  • Both sides were kept at bay until the ninth inning, when the River Hawks stepped up with two big runs on RBI singles from Nick Berger and Steve Lorenz. Bobby Grigas followed a dominant outing from Will Carey and picked up the save in a 5-3 victory.
  • Game two saw Susquehanna score a run in the first inning, three runs in the second inning, and five runs in the third inning to take a 9-0 lead. Yarem got the team going with an RBI single, Lorenz homered for the second straight day and Miller hit a three-run double to highlight the strong play.
  • The Cardinals would score twice in the fourth inning, but that would be all and the River Hawks tacked on eight more runs before it was all said and done. Chris Corrado scored four times and drove in a run as the team routed Catholic 17-2 and went home with a successful undefeated weekend.

Inside the Box Score
  • Lorenz finished the afternoon with five hits and three RBI. Yarem had a hit and an RBI in each game while Berger had a multi-hit game in game one. Corrado went 4-for-4 in game two with two RBI and four runs scored. Miller added two walks on the afternoon and leads the team with eleven on the season.
  • Lance Welsh scored four runs in game two to match Corrado. Anthony Dombrowski scored five runs over the course of the two games.
  • The pitchers combined to relinquish only two earned runs on the afternoon, as they all turned in quality performances. Carey, Grigas and Brendan Damiano did not surrender a run in their outings. Carey and Dillan Weikel each earned wins.
  • Michael Doody homered for Catholic on an otherwise quiet offensive afternoon for the Cardinals.
