McKenna Strong as Baseball Takes Down Rutgers-Camden 3-1 to Win Fourth Straight

Senior Evan McKenna threw six strong innings as Will Carey and Bobby Grigas closed it out and Ben Burman went 3-for-3 with an RBI and the Susquehanna University Baseball team won its fourth straight game by a score of 3-1 over Rutgers-Camden Wednesday afternoon at the Maplewood Sports Complex.

How It Happened
  • The first inning of the game did not see a run from either side, but the River Hawks (6-7) struck first with a single run in the top of the second. After a Burman single and an advancement to second on a balk, Lance Welsh drove him home with an RBI base knock.
  • The score would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning when Rutgers-Camden (6-9) struck back with a run to knot it up at one. McKenna would hold the Scarlet Knights scoreless for the remainder of his outing, and the team scored another run in the seventh on another RBI single by Welsh to bring home Burman.
  • With Carey in the game in relief, Burman knocked in an insurance run in the eighth, with Steve Lorenz touching home on the play.
  • Carey got through 1.2 innings of work and the team brought in Grigas to shut the door. He got out of a jam in the eighth and pitched a clean ninth inning to bring home a 3-1 victory and extend the team's win streak to four games.
Inside the Box Score
  • Pitching ruled the day for both sides, with McKenna earning a much deserved win. Carey had another stellar outing and did not record a walk for the seventh time in his seven appearances. Grigas has rounded into solid form and earned another save.
  • Burman also had a strong outing on both sides of the ball, getting on base four times in as many at-bats and making several plays at first base. Welsh drove in two important runs and Lorenz also had a multi-hit game.
  • Freshman Evan Knapp recorded a hit and a walk on the afternoon.
  • Chris Jones and Tyler Travis had two hits apiece for the Scarlet Knights in the loss.
