Lorenz Pounds Out Five Hits, Registers Walk-Off Single as Baseball Splits Double Header

Steve Lorenz went 5-for-7 on the afternoon including a walk-off single in an 8-7 win over Bridgewater State and Adam Schreck went 5-for-8 as well, as the Susquehanna University Baseball team split a doubleheader against Bridgewater State and LaRoche Saturday afternoon in Port Charlotte, Florida.

How It Happened

  • The Bears (0-1) registered the first run of the game on an RBI single against starter Ryan Monroy, but the River Hawks (1-1) came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Susquehanna also scored a run apiece in the third and fourth innings, as Monroy settled down. Schreck hit an RBI double and Alex Burman hit an RBI single as the team took a 4-1 lead.
  • Bridgewater State scored three runs in the fifth inning and added another one in the eighth to take a 5-4 lead before an Anthony Dombrowski sacrifice fly and Nick Berger RBI double made it 6-5 in favor of Susquehanna.
  • The River Hawks pitched themselves into a jam in the ninth and relinquished two runs, but Schreck's leadoff single in the bottom half of the inning gave the team life. After a Justin Miller walk and a Peter Yarem sacrifice bunt, Luke Tuttle was intentionally walked to load the bases for Lorenz. As he had done all day, Lorenz put together a great at-bat and knocked a solid single through the left side to plate the two runs and Susquehanna won, 8-7.
  • In game two, the River Hawks plated four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take command early on RBI by Yarem, Lorenz, Dombrowski and Roumes, but LaRoche (1-2) creeped back into the game and eventually took the lead at 5-4 in the fourth inning and never looked back.
  • When it was all said and done, LaRoche won this one 14-7 after a big seventh inning  that put this one out of reach.
