Abplanalp, Donnelly Achieve Milestones in Leading River Hawk Men’s Lacrosse to Key Landmark Win over Catholic

Selinsgrove, Pa. – Seniors Dylan Abplanalp (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) and Jack Donnelly (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) each had a day in leading the Susquehanna University men's lacrosse team to a key Landmark Conference victory Thursday afternoon. Susquehanna (10-6, 4-1 LC) is now in a three-way tie for first in the Landmark standings following an 11-8 victory over The Catholic University of America (8-7, 4-2 LC).
 
Abplanalp became the Landmark career saves leader with his second stop of the afternoon. He broke the previous mark of 680 set by Catholic's Harrison Holak (2013-16) with just his second save as Abplanalp entered the game with 679 career stops. He finished the day with 18 saves to bring his career total to 697.
 
Donnelly equaled the Landmark single-game record for points in a conference contest as he led all scorers with a career-best 10 points on career-highs of seven goals and three assists. With his point of the game, Donnelly tallied his 100th career point. His career total now stands at 106.

How It Happened
  • Donnelly had a hand in all but one of Susquehanna's 11 goals as the River Hawks earned their sixth consecutive victory.
  • Donnelly started his day by scoring the first three goals of the game and putting SU up 3-0 at 5:41 of the first quarter. Catholic responded by tallying three of the next four goals to pull within one at the end of the first 15 minutes.
  • The two sides alternated the first two goals of the second period before Susquehanna rattled off three straight, including two goals and an assist from Donnelly, to take an 8-4 advantage into halftime.
  • Donnelly gave the River Hawks a five-goal cushion at the beginning of the third frame. Grady Kuhn cut the deficit to 9-5 before Donnelly and sophomore attackman Colton Dick (Owings, Md./Northern) joined forces for the next two scores to widen SU's lead to six with four seconds left in the third.
  • The final quarter belonged to Catholic as the Cardinals attempted to rally, scoring twice in a 19-second span to close the gap to 11-8 with 50 seconds remaining in the game but CUA ran out of time.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Catholic outshot the River Hawks, 44-35, but Susquehanna claimed the loose ball battle by a 39-32 margin. Senior midfielder Joshua Wesolowski (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket Regional) and junior long-stick midfielder Jacob Fox (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) each had five ground balls to help SU outhustle the Cardinals.
  • The River Hawk defense was on point today as they held Catholic scoreless on eight extra-man opportunities.
  • Mike McShea scooped up a game-best 11 ground balls and helped CUA control the X as McShea won 14-of-20 face-offs.
 
Top Performers
  • Dick ended the afternoon with three goals and two assists. He now has 35 assists this season, matching the school's single-season record for assists of 35 set by Austen Lein '14 in 2014.
  • Freshman attackman Jack McLaughlin (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) dished out two assists.
  • Defensively, Fox and junior defenseman Patrick Donnelly (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) combined for seven of the team's 12 caused turnovers. Fox tied his career-high of four caused turnovers for the second time.
  • Joey Rockovich paced the Cardinals in their second straight loss with three goals and an assist while Archer Rymiszewski and Tommy Welch each chipped in a goal and an assist.
