Baseball Falls to Alvernia Despite Schreck’s Monster Day

Adam Schreck crushed a three-run home run to left field while he and four others recorded three-hit days, but the pitching and defense struggled for the Susquehanna University Baseball team Wednesday afternoon in a 20-14 loss to Alvernia in Reading.

How It Happened
  • The Golden Wolves (15-8-1) scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 4-0 lead. The River Hawks (7-11) rallied back in the top half of the second inning with four runs of their own. With two on and one out, Schreck launched a missle to left field to cut the score to 4-3. Later in the inning, Chris Corrado knocked home Craig Roumes to tie the score.
  • Alvernia would push across a run in the bottom of the second, but Susquehanna would regain the lead in the third on two runs. One would score on an error and Roumes drove home Justin Miller on the other.
  • After a scoreless bottom of the third, the River Hawks scored on a Ben Burman sacrifice fly to take a two run lead. That 7-5 advantage quickly became a 9-7 lead over the middle innings as Schreck added another RBI alongside Anthony Dombrowski.
  • The game seemed to be in the control of the River Hawks, as Alvernia always had to tack on a few runs to stay in the game, but that all changed in the fifth and sixth innings. With two outs in the fifth, the River Hawks were an out away from getting out of a jam, but could not make the final out. When it was all said and done, they trailed 14-9 after five and 20-10 after six.
  • The team would tack on four more runs over the final three innings, but ran out of at-bats and fell, 20-14.
Inside the Box Score
  • Five River Hawks recorded three-hit games and eight recorded multi-hit games. The only player to not record multiple hits was Ben Burman who had two sacrifice flies.
  • The defense and pitching let down Susquehanna in this one, with the team tallying six errors in a two-inning stretch and seven for the game. Andrew Russell was a bright spot on the mound for the team, throwing 2.2 innings to close out the contest.
  • Steve Lorenz had three hits, and has now recorded a hit in 17 of his first 18 contests. He is hitting .436 on the season and leads with 13 RBI.
  • Nathan Sides, the leading hitter for Alvernia, recorded four hits and four RBI for the game in the win.
Up Next for the River Hawks
  • Susquehanna (5-3 LC) gears up for a big three-game set with Elizabethtown (1-5 LC) this weekend. First pitch of game one of a doubleheader is scheduled to be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
