Lorenz Continues Strong Play as Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader with Elizabethtown

Steve Lorenz had a key two-RBI hit in game one while hitting a home run and a walk-off single in game two as Tyson Thrush had his best start of the year for the Susquehanna University Baseball team who swept a doubleheader from Elizabethtown Saturday afternoon in Selinsgrove.

How It Happened
  • The River Hawks (9-11 Overall, 7-3 Landmark) opened up a lead early in game one and never looked back. Lorenz got it started with a double down the left field line to plate two runs before an Anthony Dombrowski bunt single and a couple of unearned runs made it 6-0 in the second inning.
  • Starting pitcher Ryan Monroy, pitched well with the lead, getting outs on few pitches and scattering hits around without any big attacks from the Blue Jays (7-17, 1-7).
  • Elizabethtown did make it interesting in the sixth inning, but Evan McKenna came on to limit the damage. Chris Corrado had the final RBI f the game for Susquehanna and the team prevailed, 7-4.
  • Game two was a pitcher's duel the entire way, with starter Tyson Thrush leading the way for the River Hawks.
  • Lorenz picked up right where he left off, smacking a long home run to right field to give the team an early 1-0 lead. Thrush pitched to a minimum 18 batters over his first six innings of work, relinquishing zero hits and only two walks that were immediately erased on double plays.
  • The Blue Jays had a rally in the seventh, finally getting to Thrush and plating two runs on a two-out hit to take the lead.
  • Will Carey and Bobby Grigas kept Elizabethtown right there and the bats came alive in the eighth and ninth inning. First, a big RBI double from Peter Yarem tied the game at two, and Lorenz found himself up to bat in the bottom of the ninth with two runners in scoring position. With two strikes, he blooped a single into left field to bring home the winning run.
Inside the Box Score
  • Lorenz went 3-for-5 with two walks and four RBI over the course of the two games to continue his strong play. His hit in the bottom of the ninth was his second walk-off hit of the season.
  • Yarem had a strong day as well for the River Hawks. He did not register an official at-bat in game one, but had two walks and a sacrifice fly. He followed that up with a 3-for-4 day in game two with a critical RBI.
  • Thrush did not get the win, but registered his strongest start this season, as he looked dominant in the early stages. Will Carey and Bobby Grigas both had scoreless efforts in relief. Grigas got a big strikeout in the top of the ninth to help get himself out of a jam.
  • Monroy picked up his team leading third win of the season in game one.

Up Next for the River Hawks
  • The River Hawks return to Bollinger Field to cap off the three-game set with the Blue Jays Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
