Baseball Erases Eight-Run Deficit, Earns Walk-Off Win Over York

Craig Roumes had a big hit in the ninth inning to set up first and third with one out and Peter Yarem executed a perfect squeeze bunt to drive in the winning run as the Susquehanna University Baseball team erased an 8-0 deficit to defeat York 9-8 in walk-off fashion Wednesday afternoon in Selinsgrove.

How It Happened
  • The Spartans (25-13) hit the ball well early on, tallying three runs in each of the first two innings to lead 6-0. They would also add two more runs in the third to make it 8-0.
  • The River Hawks (18-15) took a little time to get going, but started making noise after a turn through the lineup. Nick Berger drove in the first run on a double that saw Justin Miller score. A Roumes RBI single, Miller two-run double and Berger RBI single made it a ball game at 8-5 through just four innings.
  • Nate Madden pitched a clean fifth inning and Ben Burman drove in two runs in the home half of the inning to make it 8-7 before a long home run by Adam Schreck made tied the game up in the seventh.
  • At this point, reliever Bobby Grigas came into the game and was making his presence known. He struck out eight players in four innings, giving the bats several chances to get the win and they did not disappoint.
  • In the bottom of the ninth inning, Schreck led things off with a walk. Two batters later, a single down the left field line by Roumes put runners on first and third with one out. Yarem then came up and executed a perfect squeeze bunt that made it past the pitcher, and pinch runner Chris Corrado made it home safely to end a thriller with a 9-8 win for the River Hawks.
