River Hawk Volleyball Beats CWRU and #10 Carnegie Mellon at DoubleTree Invitational

Lizzie Herestofa Earns 1,000 Career Dig in Case Western Reserve Win

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Susquehanna University volleyball team picked up two wins against Case Western Reserve University and No. 10 Carnegie Mellon University in night one of the DoubleTree Invitational Friday night. Junior right-side hitter Sydney Portale (Glen Mils, Pa./Garnet Valley) and first-year Rosina Esposito (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) led the River Hawks offensively while junior libero Lizzie Herestofa (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) claimed her 1,000th career dig.

Herestofa entered the match with Case Western Reserve needing just five digs to tally the 1,000th of her career. She achieved the milestone (in the second set) and then some in the River Hawks' 3-1 victory over the Spartans, finishing the match with 21 digs. After adding 11 digs in the sweep of No. 10 Carnegie Mellon, Herestofa now boasts 1,027 career digs.

How It Happened
  • The River Hawks (8-1) outscored Case Western (3-5), 79-48, to claim a 3-1 victory.
  • In the first set, the Spartans edged past Susquehanna with a 26-24 victory, recording just 15 kills to the River Hawks 17.  
  • SU was able to take set two 25-19, with 11 kills to the Spartans 6
  • The River Hawks dominated set three with a quick 25-17 victory.
  • Susquehanna edged past Case Western 25-21 in the fourth set to win the match 3-1, notching 17 kills to the Spartans 12.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Portale led the team against Case Western in kills with 19 while sophomore Riley O'Dowd  (Montville, N.J./ Morris Catholic) and Esposito each had 13.  
  • Senior setter Lindsey Pugh (Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) dominated all players with 48 assists while Herestofa recorded 21 digs.
  • Case Western's leaders were Haley Sims with 11 kills, Sara Rogers with 15 assists, and Brianna Lemon with nine digs.

How It Happened
  • Susquehanna claimed the three-set victory after two tough sets, outscoring Carnegie Mellon 66-43.
  • The Tartan threatened the 3-0 set victory in the first set only losing to the River Hawks 28-26.
  • Susquehanna again had to work past a tough Tartan team to take set two 25-23, recording 16 kills to CMU's 14.
  • Susquehanna dominated set three for a quick takedown of the Tartan 25-14 with 17 kills and an attack percentage of .394.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Esposito lead both match in kills with 18 while Portale  and O'Dowd were was also in double digits with 10 kills apiece.
  • Pugh collected a match-best 35 assists while Herestofa tallied a team-best 11 digs.
  • Sahara Aqui and Diana Balta both finished the match with 8 kills. Maia So-Holloway recorded a team-best 25 assists while Kayla Yew put up a match-best 14 digs.
