Susquehanna Men’s Soccer Suffers Double Overtime Loss

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Susquehanna University men's soccer team once again controlled possession and received a quality effort from senior goalie Matt Ellingworth (Sparta, N.J./Lenape Valley) but the River Hawks could not find the back of the net in 110 minutes of action Saturday afternoon. Susquehanna (1-4) lost its third straight contest, succumbing to a 1-0 decision in double overtime at Arcadia University (4-2).

Susquehanna 0, Arcadia 1 (2OT)

How It Happened
  • Arcadia took the only two shots of the second overtime period. The first one was high in the 104th minute while the second one was on the money as Brandon Pryor headed in Matt Berndlmaier's pass for the game-winner with just 1:59 remaining in the game.
  • Susquehanna edged the Knights, 6-5, in shots and 4-0 in corner kicks in the first half, testing Arcadia's goalie Jake Varrato just once in the ninth minute with a shot off the foot of junior midfielder Alex Bellot (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton) while three other shots were blocked by the AU defense.
  • On the side of the field, Ellingworth came up with four first-half saves to keep the Knights off the board.
  • Second-half action was more of the same as the River Hawks posted a 9-4 shot advantage and 5-3 edge in corners; however, SU could not figure out the puzzle which was Varrato as he turned away five shots.
  • Ellingworth continued to be strong in goal for Susquehanna, adding three more stops as Arcadia earned its first three corners of the game.
  • In the first 10-minute overtime period, each side fired an off-target shot.
