Three Second-Half Goals Lift River Hawk Women’s Soccer to Shutout Win

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Susquehanna University women's soccer team exploded for three goals in the second half to earn a 3-0 non-conference road win over Hartwick College in the first day of the Mayor's Cup. This is the River Hawks' second shutout victory in three outings.

How It Happened
  • All statistical categories were equal in the first half as the two sides played to a scoreless halftime score. Shots were five a piece while each goalie made two stops. The River Hawks held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks, generating two shots of the set plays.
  • Sophomore forward Samantha Chillis (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) broke the stalemate in the 53rd minute as Chillis deflected a long cross, which bounced around in the penalty box before finding the back of the net.
  • First-year forward Emily Wertz (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) sent in a low cross from the corner and senior forward Hayley Steinmetz (Stewartsville, Pa./Phillipsburg) put it past Cassandra Robataille for a two-goal cushion at 62:31.
  • Junior forward Kate Ross (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) put back her own rebound off of Robataille's save for her first tally of the season, sealing the 3-0 win in the 78th minute.

  • Susquehanna posted a 17-5 (8-5 on goal) shot advantage as the River Hawks outshot Hartwick, 12-5 in the second half.
  • SU earned eight corners to the Hawks' two.

  • Chillis, Steinmetz, and Ross each tallied their first goals of the season while junior captain Madi Welliver (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) finished with five saves.
