River Hawks Men’s Basketball Rallies for Overtime Landmark Road Win

MADISON, N.J. – Five River Hawks scored in double digits as the Susquehanna University men's basketball team overcame an 18-point deficit Wednesday night to remain perfect in Landmark Conference action. Susquehanna (10-4, 3-0 LC) pulled out an 81-78 overtime triumph over the host Drew University Rangers (11-3, 2-1 LC) for its second consecutive win.

How It Happened
First Half
  • Drew jumped out to a 9-2 lead as the River Hawks went cold for over three minutes before sophomore guard Danny Frauenheim (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) knocked down a three-ball at 15:17.
  • A pair of free throws by sophomore guard Lukas Yurasits (New York, N.Y./Berkeley Carroll) and an old-fashioned three-point play by sophomore center Wes Simons (Jefferson Township, Pa./Scranton Prep) handed Susquehanna its first lead of the game, 10-9, at 14:05.
  • The two teams traded leads for the next three minutes until the Rangers went on a 20-1 run during a six-minute span to boast their biggest lead of the night, an 18-point advantage at 5:05 (31-13).
  • SU closed out the half on a 10-3 run, including five points by junior guard Mike Kempski (West Chester, Pa./Salesianum) on back-to-back baskets, to close the gap to 34-23 at halftime.
 
Halftime
  • The River Hawks shot 23.3-percent from the field, including 3-of-16 from downtown, and were led in scoring by Yurasits (6), Frauenheim (5), and Kempski (5).
  • Lybrant Robinson led all scorers with a dozen points on 5-of-10 shooting while Drew posted a 36.7-field goal percentage.
 
Second Half
  • Junior captain Matt LaCorte (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and Frauenheim scored the first five points of the second half to cut the deficit to six.
  • Five consecutive points by Howard McBurnie, Jr. had the Rangers up 42-33 at 16:48 before four straight points by junior captain Bryce Butler (Abingdon, Md./Suffield Academy) and a Simons jumper had Susquehanna within four two minutes later.
  • The River Hawks continued to claw their way back as a Butler layup at 11:53 pulled them within 46-43 before a 5-0 push by Drew had the hosts ahead 54-46 just 40 seconds later.
  • Nine points in three minutes gave Susquehanna its first lead since leading 10-9 as SU claimed a 55-54 margin.
  • Drew outscored the River Hawks, 8-4, over the next four minutes to retake the lead.
  • LaCorte, Simons, and Frauenheim combined for the team's next 10 points and put SU in the driver's seat with a 69-67 lead with 12 seconds remaining in regulation.
  • Michael Boice was fouled with seven ticks on the clock and made both free throws for a 69-69 draw.
  • Yurasits' three-point attempt as time expired was blocked Walker Malachi, Jr. and the game went into overtime.
 
Overtime
  • The Rangers notched nine of the first 16 points in the extra frame to stake 78-76 advantage with 1:03 remaining.
  • LaCorte tied up the game at 78-all with his jumper with 52 seconds to go before Frauenheim grabbed a key defensive rebound with 27 seconds on the clock and closed out the game by going 3-for-4 at the charity stripe to seal the win.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Susquehanna finished shooting 40.8-percent from the floor and poured in 58 points between the second half and overtime for its second consecutive come-from-behind win.
  • The River Hawks forced Drew into 24 turnovers with 11 steals and converted those miscues into 26 points, including 15 in the second half off of 12 mishandles.
  • The Rangers edged SU, 41-40, on the boards.
  • Susquehanna now leads the all-time series with Drew, 20-13, following tonight's win. Last season, the Rangers claimed the season series.
 
Top Performers
  • Frauenheim finished in a three-way tie for the game-lead with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting and a 6-of-7 effort at the line. He also added five assists, four steals and two rebounds.
  • Kempski came off the bench and collected a career-best 13 points, including eight in the second half. He also picked a pair of pockets.
  • Butler scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half and hauled in a season-best eight boards to go along with two assists and one steal.
  • LaCorte tallied all 13 of his points in the final 25 minutes of the game as he drained three triples and added six caroms.
  • Yurasits finished the night with 10 points as he rounded out four starters in double digits while chipping in five rebounds.
  • Riley Collins and Robinson both finished with 17 points to lead Drew while McBurnie contributed a near double-double with 10 boards and nine points.
