Susquehanna Baseball Falls to No. 34 Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. – Junior Peter Yarem (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) cracked two home runs Sunday afternoon but the Susquehanna University baseball team dropped their second game of the season. Susquehanna (0-2) dropped a 12-5 non-conference decision at No. 34 Shenandoah University (6-0).

How It Happened
  • With no outs in the bottom of the third, Shenandoah struck first when Anthony Ward singled to center field with bases loaded to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore starter Dillan Weikel (Beaver Springs, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) answered by striking out the next three batters to close the inning.
  • After the top of the fourth ended with three River Hawk runners left on base, the Hornets increased their lead by six for a 7-0 advantage. Keegan Woolford (1), Grant Thompson (1), Anthony Ward (1), Tyler Kroll (1), and Pearce Bucher (1) all contributed RBIs in the scoring run while Woolford, Thompson, Ward, and Kroll all scored runs as well with Woolford stealing home.
  • Shenandoah got right back to scoring in the fifth when Thompson hit a two-RBI single to right to give the Hornets a 9-0 cushion.
  • Susquehanna tallied their first run of the day in the sixth with on a solo home run by junior Peter Yarem (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood).
  • The Hornets matched the River Hawks' score in their half of the sixth with a Bucher RBI single.
  • In the seventh inning, Woolford hit a two-run homer to increase Shenandoah's lead to 12-1.
  • Senior Alex Burman (Wallingford, Pa./Episcopal) scored in the eighth on a wild pitch before Yarem notched his second home run of the day, this one for three runs to round out the scoring.
  • Junior Kyle Sears (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) kept Susquehanna in striking distance by limiting the Hornets to just a single and striking out two in the eighth.
  • Aaron Torres cut the River Hawks' rally short as Torres retired the lineup in order in the ninth.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Shenandoah notched 12 runs on 15 hits with one error while the River Hawks tallied five runs on five hits with two errors.
  • The Hornets left 11 on base, stole six bases, and connected on three extra-base hits.
  • Susquehanna stranded seven and collected three extra-base hits.
 
Top Performers
  • Yarem was 2-for-2 with four RBI to lead Susquehanna at the plate while senior Craig Roumes (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury), junior Chris Corrado (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe), and sophomore Evan Knapp (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) each had a hit.
  • Weikel (0-1) suffered the loss with 3.1 innings of work, striking out five and walking five while giving up four runs on four hits.
  • Thompson went 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBI in leading Shenandoah as the Hornets remain undefeated.
