Werner Leads Women's Soccer to Third Straight Conference Win

SELINSGROVE, PA - The Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team won their third straight conference game, and their fourth straight game overall, with a 3-0 win over Juniata College on Wednesday. The team is now 3-1 in conference play and has moved into sole possession of third place in the Landmark standings.

The River Hawks dominated all facets of the game with their play on Wednesday night, holding the Eagles to just one shot and scoring three goals. Juniata was also only able to earn one corner on the evening, struggling to get any sort of offensive rhythm.

The River Hawks took some time to get on the scoreboard, as they didn't score until the 38th minute despite numerous chances at the goal. They finally scored when Anna Werner found Gillian Maack in the box for her third goal of the season. The ball was nearly saved by the Eagle keeper, after an odd bounce appeared to come out of the goal, but the shot had already crossed the line. The score gave the River Hawks a 1-0 lead at halftime and something to show for their stellar attack in the first half.

The strong offensive display continued in the second half, as Werner went right to work, scoring a goal in the 49th minute. Olivia Ricci was able to locate the senior with a cross to the left side of the box for the Susquehanna score. Werner added to her excellent night, a little bit later in the second half, by capping it off with a score off a penalty kick in the 70th minute. The kick was awarded after a River Hawk pass was touched by an Eagle hand inside the box. The two goals gave Werner her fourth and fifth of the season, putting her atop the team leader board for the goals on the season.

Along with the strong offensive display, the defense was outstanding for Susquehanna throughout the 90 minute match.  Chloe Wieczkowski benefited greatly from the strong play of her back line and midfield as she notched her seventh win and third shutout on the season, all of which are career highs for the senior.

Other Notes
  • Over the course of 90 minutes, the River Hawks attempted 25 shots, nine of which were on goal. They also earned six corners, but did not garner any scores out of the chances.
