ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (October 15, 2021) -- Junior forward
Emily Wertz scored her fifth and sixth goals of the season Saturday, lifting the Susquehanna University women's soccer team to its fifth straight victory with a 3-1 road win over Elizabethtown College in Landmark Conference action.
Wertz has now tallied five goals in her last four games, including chalking up a pair of two-goal contests during the span. Her play has been instrumental to SU's five-game winning streak, with four of the games coming within the Landmark Conference. With Saturday's victory, Susquehanna moved into second place alone in the Landmark, and needs just one more point to clinch a playoff spot.
The River Hawks (8-4-0, 4-1-0 Landmark) struck first in the 15th minute, as Wertz received a through ball from
Gillian Maack and dribbled in on the left side. The junior got some free space on the edge of the 18-yard box and beat the keeper to her short side for the early advantage.
Elizabethtown (6-5-2, 3-1-1 Landmark) answered back at the 38:36 mark of the game, as Maddie McWhinney scored from distance for her first goal of the season. Less than a minute later, SU regained its lead at 39:23 on a beautiful set-piece goal. The sequence started with a nicely placed free kick to the feet of Maack who flicked the pass to
Olivia Ricci, and her shot beat the keeper low to the right for the score.
That's how the game would stand until Wertz gave the River Hawks some insurance, as she scored a nearly identical goal to her first of the day at 52:56 to make it 3-1. That would be enough for SU, as it held on for the important conference victory.
Susquehanna outshot its hosts 18-11 on the day, while earning four corner kicks to just the two for the Blue Jays. Maack had a strong game with six shots (four on goal), an assist and also set up both Wertz goals, and
Anna Werner also finished with three shots.
Carlie Marquette made four saves in net for Susquehanna, earning her first career win.
The win streak for the River Hawks of five ties for the longest since the end of the 2019 season, when SU went into the Landmark Conference playoffs on a five-game spurt. McWhinney had a team-best three shots for Elizabethtown, while Trinity Solo stopped seven shots in the loss.
