Offensive Explosion Leads Women's Soccer to Big Win

SELINGSGROVE, PA - On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, the Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team exploded for a season-high nine goals in a 9-1 win over Penn College. Seven women scored goals, as the team scored the most goals in a single game since a nine-goal effort against Penn College in 2005.

The goals began to pour in during the 18th minute, when Emily Wertz scored off a pass from Anna Werner, as Wertz lifted the ball just over the Penn goalkeeper and into the net for the score. Gillian Maack scored the next goal, off the foot off Wertz, to extend the lead to two. Not even a minute later, Wertz took a deflected ball off a Penn defender all the way to the goal, for her second of the game and her ninth of the season.

Maggie Morrison picked up her first goal of the season before the end of the half, as Caroline Lewis placed a ball just out of the outstretched arms of the Wildcat keeper to Morrison for the score. The 4-0 lead would hold until halftime, as the River Hawks out shot Penn College 22-1 in the first period.

The second period saw the River Hawk lead continue to expand, as Maya Ruhalter scored her first career goal, off the foot of Wertz. Maack added another goal in the 54th minute when the junior connected on a free kick that deflected off the goalie and into the goal.

Juliana DeGeorge scored her second goal of the season in the 61st minute and it was once again Wertz who picked up the assist. With the assist, Wertz gave herself seven points on the afternoon and also tied the conference record for assists in a game.

The final two goals were the first of the season for both Casey Nickerson and Casey Grehan. Nickerson scored on a header when Morrison found the junior streaking towards the goal. Grehan found the back of the net in 80' minute when Lewis passed a free kick from just outside the box right to the senior midfielder, pushing the shot into the left corner of the net.

The offensive outburst matched the highest goal total of any Landmark Conference team this season, as Goucher scored nine goals back on September 18th versus Notre Dame (MD.)

Wertz now leads the Landmark Conference in assists (7) and points (25). She is also tied for the conference lead in goals (9) .
