Clendenin and Chillis Propel Women's Soccer to a Double Overtime Win

SELINSGROVE, PA - Trailing 1-0 with just two minutes left in regulation, the Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team was able to pull off an improbable win, scoring in the 88th and 105th minute to record their first Landmark Conference win of 2021. The team defeated the Drew University Rangers, improving to 4-4 (1-1), while the Rangers fell to 5-4-1(0-2-0).

The Rangers were the first team to get on the board as Rebecca Racine scored an unassisted goal in the 36th minute to open up a 1-0 advantage. Despite a number of good looks for the River Hawk offense, they could not find the back of net in the first half. As a team, they took 11 shots in the first half, with almost half of those shots on goal. Drew, on the other hand, was only able to attempt four shots, but was able to get a goal and head to halftime with the lead.

In the second half, it was more of the same for the Susquehanna offense. Looks at the goal were plentiful, but the the back of the net remained elusive for the River Hawks. Finally, in the 88th minute, it was a Susquehanna defender who finally broke through the Ranger defense.

After being awarded their ninth and final corner kick of regulation, Emily Wertz wound up and placed a ball directly into the box, finding senior defender Marley Clendenin. The senior headed the ball right past the Ranger goalie, tallying her team leading fourth goal of the season..The goal tied the game with just 1:54 left in regulation, sending the game into into an extra period.

The first period saw both squads go scoreless, as Susquehanna had a shot go wide, and the Rangers had two shots that missed high. In the second overtime, the game was at a stalemate until Olivia Ricci found Sam Chillis on the left hand side of the box. The senior worked around her defender as she received the pass from Ricci and knocked home the game winner, clinching the team's first Landmark Conference win of the year.
