Season High Six Goals Gives Field Hockey Dominating Win Over Drew

MADISON, NJ - The Susquehanna University Field Hockey team defeated the Drew University Rangers in dominating fashion on Saturday afternoon, scoring a season high six goals. The goal total was the most by the River Hawks since a 6-1 win on October 23rd, 2019 over Cabrini.

Susquehanna put on an offensive clinic in Madison as they scored three goals in the first quarter to put the game out of reach almost immediately. The team was able to get on the board quick, as they scored in the first four minutes of play, when Sarah McAndrews found Cassie West for her first goal of the season. Not even four minutes later, Katie Bucher tallied her first goal of the season from the top of the circle as she corralled a loose ball. The first quarter scoring was capped off by Ava Greene, who slapped in a shot from the right side, slotting the ball inside the post.

The first half scoring wouldn't stop there for the River Hawks as they were able to collect one more goal just before the end of the half. Katie Koch recorded her third goal of the season off a pass from Jadyn Brezinski, as the senior sent the shot in from the left side of the circle.

In the second half, the River Hawks were able to pile on the scoring total, as Allyson Heard collected two goals in just over a three minute span. In the 43rd minute, Heard was given a chance to finish a penalty stroke and came through for her first goal of the season. Not long after, in the 46th minute, Kari Schmidt found Heard who tipped in Schmidt's blast from the edge of the shooting circle in for the goal.

Drew only took one shot on the afternoon, as Janelle Arch redirected a hit from the middle of the field for the goal.

Other Notes
  • Over 60 minutes, Susquehanna outshot Drew 23-1, with 18 shots on goal from the River Hawk offense.
  • Susquehanna did most of their damage without the benefit of corners, as they only had two corners in the first three quarters. Overall they held the advantage in corners 8-2.
  • Mackenzie Bross played the first half and did not face any shots to earn the win, while Ashley Derrick saw her first action of the year and allowed just the one goal.
Up Next
  • The River Hawks will return home to face off against Alvernia at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 6th.
