SELINSGROVE, PA - The Susquehanna University Men's Soccer team defeated the Juniata College Eagles on Wednesday with an overpowering offensive display, as the team notched a season-high five goals. Four River Hawks scored as they moved into a four-way tie for first place in the Landmark Conference.
The scoring began quickly in this one, as Juniata was the first to get on the board. Despite the Eagles coming into the game with just one goal in conference play, they were able to weave through the Susquehanna defense in the first minute and score the games opening goal.
The River Hawks came with a rapid response, and a strong one, in the next 18 minutes as the team would score four goals, sending away all the energy the Eagles had in the first minute.
Brian McKee tied the game in the third minute as
Adrian Dilascio place a ball inside the box, that
Michael Morelli flicked to McKee, who finished by slotting the shot in the left corner of the goal.
Three minutes later, Morelli got a goal of his own when
Olivier Mathieu found the junior on a run to the right side of the box after blowing past his defender. The River Hawks extended their lead in the 16th minute when
Joe Armstrong collected his fourth goal of the season on a header, and once again Mathieu came up with an assist on the play off a corner kick.
The final goal of the half was Morelli's second of the game as the junior forward received a pass from McKee, beating the back line of the defense to the ball and finishing the shot just before the goalie could stop the shot.
Despite the great offensive performance, the highlight of the half may have been a save from keeper
Gerrit Stech. After a handball by SU in the box in the 42nd minute, the Eagles were primed to cut the River Hawk lead in half. Nicholas Sinapius attempted the kick and went right, the same as Stech, whose outstretched arm deflected the ball out of bounds, and kept the score at 4-1.
The score would remain 4-1 heading into the half, as Susquehanna had now set a season-high for goals in a half against their conference foe. Despite the large goal total, the team only attempted five shots, as the Hawks were able to take advantage of their chances close to goal.
In the 55th minute, Juniata did their best to keep the game close by scoring their second goal of the game, this time off the foot of Malvin Madzimbamuto. The score did not faze the River Hawks as they kept the score knotted at 4-2 until Dilascio finished off the excellent offensive game from Susquehanna with goal in the 75th minute. The sophomore scored as he controlled a deflection amidst several Juniata defenders and found the left corner of the net for his fifth goal of the year.
