Field Hockey Wins Pivotal Conference Game Over Catholic

SELINSGROVE, PA - The Susquehanna University Field Hockey team came away with a big win on a cloudy, rainy Saturday afternoon, defeating the Catholic University Cardinals 2-0. Two first half goals for the River Hawks proved to be the difference as they took home the Landmark Conference win.

Susquehanna broke out of the gate with a strong offensive attack, pressuring the Catholic defense immediately. The pressure proved to be too strong for the Cardinals as Kari Schmidt connected on a long strike for the first goal of the game in the fifth minute. Sam Banks found the first-year for the goal, picking up the assist off an insert on the penalty corner.

The penalty corner proved fruitful for the River Hawks once again in the second quarter as Banks inserted once more and found Schmidt again. This time Schmidt made a beautiful pass to the right corner of the box to Annalee Smith, who connected on her third goal of the year with the score.

Susquehanna kept the 2-0 lead into halftime, as they out shot Catholic 3-2 in the first half, and were even with four corners each.

The second half saw the River Hawks continue to keep up the pressure on the Cardinal defense, but were unable to convert any of the chances into goals. Fortunately, the Susquehanna defense remained strong, only allowing Catholic to take one shot in the second half, which was saved by Mackenzie Bross

On the day, Bross only recorded one save on the only shot she faced. Her record in goal improved to 13-3 and she earned her seventh shutout with the effort.

With the win today, the River Hawks clinched a spot in the Landmark Conference playoffs, as they now have the tie breakers over both Catholic and Elizabethtown with one game to go in the conference schedule.
