Men's Soccer Falls to Catholic in Heartbreaking Overtime Loss

WASHINGTON D.C. - The Susquehanna University Men's Soccer team fell to Catholic University in overtime on Saturday evening, as the Cardinals scored three minutes into the extra period. Catholic trailed for over 77 minutes in regulation, before they tied the game with just over three minutes left in regulation.

The River Hawks offense got going early, staying hot after their five goal performance on Wednesday night. In the 9th minute, Michael Morelli found a cutting Kevin Ayoso for his first goal of his junior season. After Catholic turned over possession to the River Hawks, Morelli was able to tap the ball through two Cardinal defenders, leaving just Ayoso and the goalie, providing an easy score for Susquehanna. 

The 1-0 score would hold until halftime, despite Catholic seemingly holding an edge offensively. The Cardinals out shot the River Hawks 13-4 in the first half and held an 8-1 advantage on corners. Gerrit Stech was a big reason Susquehanna was able to hold the lead as he made five saves in the first half. The lopsided shot total was also a product of the River Hawks playing a man down, after the team lost a player to a red card in the 26th minute. 

The second half saw the River Hawk lead hold for a bit longer, as Stech continued to be berated with shots and make saves in net. The sophomore made another five saves in the half, to give himself a total of 10 on the day. 

The Cardinals finally broke through to tie the game in the 86th minute when Darius Siahpooosh connected with the back of net, forcing overtime. In overtime, just three minutes into the extra period, Andrew Morris scored to end the game, and give Susquehanna the loss. 

Over the entire 93 minute game, Catholic out shot the River Hawks 31-5, as Susquehanna only attempted one shot in the second half and regulation.
