WASHINGTON D.C. - The Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team clinched a playoff berth with a win over Catholic University on Saturday afternoon. The team dominated the Cardinals, scoring four goals and completely shutting down the Catholic offense in the Landmark Conference win.
The River Hawks began their scoring early in the first half, as
Emily Wertz connected on the first goal of the day unassisted, as she dribbled into the box and buried the shot into the right corner of the net. The score increased her team leading goal total to seven scores on the year.
The 1-0 lead would hold for over 25 minutes before
Mikela Florio would collect her first goal of the season. The sophomore scored her first career goal off a pass from
Anna Werner, who found Florio right in front of the net for the score.
The 2-0 lead would stand heading into halftime with the River Hawks holding an 11-2 shot advantage and 2-0 advantage in corners.
The second half would see two more goals from Susquehanna, both of the unassisted variety.
Gillian Maack collected the third goal of the day and her fourth of the season in the 57th minute when she connected on a free kick. The final goal came from the foot of Werner in the 85th minute, as the senior tallied her sixth goal of the season, just before the end of regulation.
Carlie Marquette earned the win in goal, as the junior stopped three shots and collected her first shutout of the season and of her career.
With the win, the River Hawks now have 15 points in conference play, clinching them a playoff spot, which will take place on November 3rd. The final games next weekend will determine seeding, and whether or not Susquehanna will play host to a Landmark Conference playoff game.
