River Hawk Field Hockey Tops Cabrini 2-0 For 15th Win

RADNOR, PA (October 26, 2021) -- Senior defender Annalee Smith scored her scored two goals for the second straight game Tuesday evening, helping the Susquehanna University field hockey team to an 2-0 shutout victory at Cabrini University in play from Dixon Field.

The victory was the sixth straight for Susquehanna (15-3), while also tying for the second-most wins for a single season in program history. SU tied the 2016 season when the squad went 15-4, while only the 17 wins in 2002 are more than the 2021 season for the River Hawks.

The squad jumped out quick on the host Cavaliers (9-7), as Smith was at the right post and finished a deflected shot from the top of the circle off of a penalty corner at 13:18 of the game for a 1-0 lead. Susquehanna would continue to dominate play, posting five shots in the second quarter along with two more penalty corners but couldn't up its lead.

Susquehanna would have its first prolonged defensive stand midway through the third quarter, but a shot from Cabrini's Kelly Sweeney was denied by Mackenzie Bross. Minutes later, SU would be awarded a penalty stroke and Smith fired her attempt past the Cavalier keeper to double the River Hawk lead.

SU had two more good chances in the fourth quarter, but used its strong midfield play and press to keep the ball out of the zone for the majority of play over the final 15 minutes. Susquehanna outshot its hosts 12-1 on the contest, while earning six of the contest's 10 penalty corners.

Senior Sam Banks fired a team-high three shots on the night, while Katie Bucher, Kari Schmidt and Smith each took two attempts on goal. With the two tallies, Smith upped her season total to seven on the year, and it was her third multi-goal game of the season.

Bross made one stop for the River Hawks in recording her ninth shutout of the season and her fourth consecutive clean sheet. Over the six-match win streak for the River Hawks, they have outscored opposition 12-1.
