BALTIMORE, MD (October 30, 2021) -- The Susquehanna University field hockey team had three players net two goals apiece, holding the host Gophers of Goucher College without a shot in an 8-0 win in the regular season finale for the River Hawks in Landmark Conference play Saturday.
The victory was the River Hawks (16-3, 5-2 Landmark) seventh straight, including five consecutive shutouts. The goals were slow to come on Saturday though, as SU outshot their hosts 4-0 in the first half while taking five penalty corners but couldn't get on the board.
Things opened up though in the second stanza, as senior
Katie Koch scored off of a penalty corner at 24:39 of the game with help from
Kari Schmidt to make it 1-0. Minutes later, SU got another penalty corner and again converted as first-year
Rebecca Ripans scored on a perfectly performed corner for her fifth goal of the season.
Just before halftime, the River Hawks dented the back of the cage to make it 3-0 as
Sam Banks scored her fifth of the season with help from Koch at 29:03 of the contest. SU had an 11-0 shot lead at the break, while earning all 10 penalty corners in the opening half.
The River Hawks would score two more times in the third quarter, with the first tally as
Katie Bucher scored off a penalty corner with help from Ripans. Banks netted her second of the day and sixth of the season with just over two minutes left in the quarter as she turned and fired from 12 yards out to sneak inside the right post.
In the fourth quarter, Ripans doubled her scoring output on the day as she put in a rebound off a penalty corner shot to make it 6-0. Less than a minute later, Koch got on the board again as she won a ball on the end line and beat the keeper on the short side for her fifth of the year. The score reached eight with 12 minutes to go, as
Katie Bucher and
Kelsey Murray assisted
Cassie West for her third of the campaign.
In all, the River Hawks outshot their hosts 24-0 while taking all 16 of the game's penalty corners. Bucher tallied two assists in addition to her goal, while Koch finished with two goals and an assist. Ripans also scored on both of her shots for SU, and
Mackenzie Bross earned yet another shutout, her ninth of the season.
The current win streak for SU is its longest since an eight-game stretch in 2018, and today's win tied for the regular season record for wins in a year with 16.
