SELINSGROVE, PA - After two extra periods went scoreless, the Susquehanna Men's Soccer team settled for a tie with Landmark Conference foe Goucher College on Senior Day. The tie locked the team into the fourth seed for the Landmark Conference playoffs, setting up a rematch with Catholic, who defeated the River Hawks in over time just last weekend.
Prior to the game, six seniors were honored for their time with the Susquehanna men's soccer program. Student assistant Ed Lynch and players
Joe Armstrong,
Brian McKee,
Jon Mickens,
Axel Scott, and
Kyle Speckhart were recognized for their service to the program, for their accomplishments while with the team, and as students at Susquehanna University.
At the outset of the game, things started off slowly for both squads as they looked to find their footing. Susquehanna seemed to start to figure things out offensively as they rattled off three shot attempts in a four minute span, early on in the period.
In the 18th minute, the River Hawk offense produced their first goal of the game, going to the duo of
Adrian Dilascio and
Michael Morelli that has been on fire through the month of October. Dilascio used a burst of speed to push past the Goucher defense and found the sliding Morelli on a run to the goal, for his ninth goal of the season. The score gave Morelli his eighth goal in his last seven games and his ninth goal in his last nine games.
Goucher had an excellent chance to tie in the 27' when conference leading goal scorer Jeremiah Odubade had two consecutive shots on goal, but both were stopped by Susquehanna keeper
Gerrit Stech, keeping the lead for the River Hawks which stood through halftime.
The beginning of the second half saw the Gophers tie the game up in the 52' minute when Odubade fired a shot that was saved by Stech once more, but this time the second chance deflected to Xavier Dever, who buried the shot to tie the game.
The rest of the second period saw nonstop action, as it felt each team had an excellent shot to take the lead several times each. One of the best looks in the second half came for
Max Paczewski in the 80', when the first-year had a one-on-one with the goalie but the shot was stopped by the Gopher keeper.
Overtime saw the shots become increasingly scarce with possibly the best look for Susquehanna coming in the second extra period at the 102nd minute mark. A sliding kick from Dilascio found an open
Brian McKee who took a shot that was saved by the Gopher keeper, keeping the River Hawks from securing the victory. Eight more minutes of scoreless soccer ended the game in a tie, forcing Susquehanna to settle for the fourth seed in the conference playoffs.
The team finished with the same record as the last men's soccer team to make the postseason, as the 2015 team went 9-7-2 (4-2-2). That team secured the third seed in the conference playoffs and fell to Scranton on the road, losing 2-0 in their first round matchup.
