Men's Tennis Ends Fall With 6-3 Win Over Penn State Harrisburg

SELINSGROVE, PA (October 9, 2021) -- On a beautiful afternoon in Selinsgrove, the Susquehanna University men's tennis team finished its 2021-22 fall season with a strong 6-3 win over Penn State Harrisburg in action from the Garrett Tennis Courts Saturday. 

The River Hawks (4-1) took an early advantage thanks to an 8-3 win for John Duncan and Joshua Sanderson at No. 2 doubles, as the pair moved to 5-1 this fall and 3-0 in dual matches. After the Lions tied the match thanks to a No. 1 doubles decision, SU regained the match edge with an exciting 8-7 (3) win at No. 3 pairs as Tim Basta and Ethan Cooley outlasted Evan Stillwell and Derwin Merca. Basta and Cooley finish the fall with a team-high six doubles wins together, posting a strong 4-0 showing in dual matches.

Penn State Harrisburg tied the match up at No. 1 singles, but Sanderson regained the lead for SU with a straight set win at No. 2, as he dispatched of Aaron Krasley 6-3, 6-3 to finish the fall a perfect 6-0 in singles play. The Lions wouldn't go away though, as Basta was topped by Sachin Venkatesh 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 to make the score 3-3 heading into the final three singles matches. The bottom part of the lineup would come up clutch for the River Hawks, as Duncan won all 12 of his games in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4. 

The clinching point came at No. 6 singles, as Kyle Wagner earned his fifth singles win of the fall with a 6-3, 6-4 straight set win to give SU the team victory. Cooley would register his second win of the day at No. 5 singles, as he responded from falling in the second set to knock off Nick Rohn 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 to finish the fall 4-1. 

Other Notes
  • The River Hawks finished the fall with a .737 winning percentage in singles play, going 28-10 overall in individual play. 
  • SU won 80 percent of its doubles matches in dual matches this fall, going 12-3.

  • Susquehanna will take the remainder of the fall off before coming back in 2022 to continue its campaign in the spring.
