SELINSGROVE, PA (March 20, 2022) -- Susquehanna University men's tennis newcomer
Henrik Sandstede picked up a pair of victories to start his SU career Sunday, highlighting a strong start to the 2022 spring season for the River Hawks in a 7-2 non-conference victory over King's College (Pa.) in play at Garrett Sports Complex Courts.
The River Hawks upped their record to 5-1 on the season, thanks in part to the consistency at both singles and doubles this year. After Sunday's match, Susquehanna has now won 75 percent of their outings in singles, while going 21-8 in doubles for a win percentage of 72.4 percent.
That was on display for Susquehanna Sunday, as the River Hawks picked up two of the three doubles points while earning all but one match in singles. SU started the afternoon with a quick 8-1 win by
Carson Barry and
Kyle Wagner at No. 3 doubles, followed by an 8-3 win at No. 1 pairs by
Emil Vyskocil and Sandstede to make it 2-0. The best doubles affair of the match was at No. 2, where Aidan Temple and Patrick Pech rallied to knock off
Conor Ryan and
Ethan Cooley of SU 8-6.
Susquehanna led 2-1 heading to singles play and immediately took a 3-1 lead as
Joshua Sanderson made quick work of Tommy Hallahan at the No. 2 spot with scores of 6-1, 6-1. Sanderson is an unblemished 7-0 on the season in doubles, going 6-0 at the No. 2 spot this year.
Sandstede put the River Hawks to within one of clinching the team win at No. 3 singles, winning his first collegiate singles match over Pech with a 6-1, 6-2 scoreline. Sandstede joined the program this semester in an exchange program from his native land of Germany.
The clinching win for the River Hawks came in convincing fashion at No. 4 singles, as
Tim Basta moved to 4-3 on the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Temple. With the team victory in the bag, Susquehanna continued to roll as
John Duncan defeated Cody Zheng 6-2, 6-0 for his first match and win of the year at No. 5 singles. No. 6 singles also went the way of the hosts, as
Alex Baker played and won his first match of the year with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jacob Nelson.
King's picked up a singles match at No. 1, as Logan Gregory and Vyskovil played a fantastic match with Gregory coming back for a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) decision.
