Women's Tennis Edges Penn State Harrisburg In Fall Finale, 5-4

SELINSGROVE, PA (October 9, 2021) -- With the match tied at three wins apiece late in singles play, Kristen Bair and Chelsea Kneedler posted clutch victories at No. 6 and No. 5, respectively, to lift the Susquehanna University women's tennis team to a thrilling 5-4 win over Penn State Harrisburg in action from the Garrett Tennis Courts Saturday afternoon. The win moved the River Hawks to 4-2, as the squad will pack up for the fall before getting the season back underway in the spring time.

The match was close throughout, as the River Hawks took an early 1-0 deficit in doubles at No. 2, but battled back to pick up an 8-4 win at No. 3 pairs thanks to the play from Julie Bramley and Isabella Scappaticci. The doubles pair finished their fall season 5-0 together, with all five wins coming at the No. 3 position. At No. 1 doubles, Ashley Searer and Haley White pulled out a critical 8-4 to take that valuable advantage into singles play. White and Searer have won two straight in doubles, and four of their six this fall.

In singles action, Searer finished her fall season 4-2 with a straight set victory over Samantha Bogush with scores of 6-1, 7-5. Penn State Harrisburg pulled even in the match with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, but Bair stopped the Lions run with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles to push the River Hawks to within one of the clinching victory. That win would come at No. 5, as Kneedler pushed past Sarah Shaub at the No. 5 spot with a 6-3, 7-5 win, as she moved to 4-1 on the fall. The final match of the day came at No. 4 singles, and it was nailbiter as Olivia Hitz topped Scappaticci 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (4).

With the win, the River Hawks stopped a two-match losing skid to Penn State Harrisburg, with both of the last two outings with the Lions ending in 5-4 decisions.
