SELINSGROVE, PA (December 8, 2021) -- Senior Vinny DeAngelo scored a game-high 25 points for No. 19 Swarthmore College, helping his Garnet squad to an 88-60 non-conference win over the Susquehanna University men's basketball team in play from O.W. Houts Gymnasium Wednesday evening.
The story of the game was the turnover battle and the points off turnovers, as Swarthmore (7-1) turned over the River Hawks 15 times which ended in 28 points off those turnovers for the Garnet. Swarthmore also did a lot of its damage in the paint, outscoring Susquehanna 56-30 in that category in rolling to the victory.
Swarthmore was hot from the on-set of the game, scoring the first seven points, but SU (5-3) pulled to within four at 10-6 after a jumper from
Howie Rankine, Jr. four minutes into the contest. With the score 15-10 in favor of the Garnet, Swarthmore chalked up an 11-0 spurt to take a 16-point lead at 12:12 of the first half following a three-point play from George Corzine. Susquehanna trimmed its deficit down to 13 points once before halftime, but Swarthmore would take an 18-point edge into the break at 44-26.
In the second half the Garnet continued to shoot the ball well, hitting on 54.3 percent from the field, taking 11 more shots in the period thanks to offensive rebounds and turnovers from SU. The River Hawks shot a strong 50 percent from the floor in the second half, but only got as close as 16 points in taking the home loss.
Senior
Danny Frauenheim was 6-of-9 from the field for a team-high 14 points, adding five rebounds as well, while first-year
Cooper Haberern finished with seven points off the bench for Susquehanna. The River Hawks had six players with exactly six points apiece, as senior
Lukas Yurasits and first-year
Isaiah Oluajayi each booked six points and six rebounds. Rankine tallied six points, two boards and was 3-of-3 from the floor, while
Steven Ressler played a career-high 27 minutes en route to six points.
The River Hawks were 24-of-53 (45.3 percent) from the field, but made just three of their 11 three-point attempts (27.3 percent).
DeAngelo got to his game-high total for Swarthmore on 12-of-20 shooting, posting a game-high three steals as well, while Conor Hardkins posted 16 points as well. George Visconti finished with 12 points, and Corzine came off the bench to added 11 points and seven rebounds. Michael Caprise also posted a game-leading 12 boards for the Garnet, which finished 37-of-74 from the floor while registering 44 points in each half.
