Mancuso Hits First Career Homer as River Hawks Baseball Splits with Scranton

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – First-year Michael Mancuso (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) hit his first collegiate home run Monday afternoon as the Susquehanna University baseball team split a Landmark Conference doubleheader with the University of Scranton. Susquehanna (7-8, 7-5 LC) took command of the first game, 7-1, while Scranton (11-7, 11-7 LC) claimed an 8-0 shutout win in the nightcap.
 
GAME 1
How It Happened
Scranton staked a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Corey Zientek scored on a wild pitch after hitting a leadoff triple.
 
In the home half of the first inning, the River Hawks put up two runs on a two-out double by first-year Kris Morrow (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic), scoring sophomore Brock Veit (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South), who had a leadoff walk, and fifth-year senior Craig Roumes (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury), who drew a walk.
 
Mancuso gave Susquehanna a two-run lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out solo shot over the leftfield fence.
 
The River Hawks broke the game open with four runs in the fifth. Fifth-year senior Justin Miller (Rockaway, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) started the scoring with a two-out RBI single to stretch the lead to 4-1. After a Scranton pitching change, Morrow connected on a two-RBI double before junior Adam Schreck (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) cracked an RBI double to score Morrow and push the SU lead to 7-1.
 
Inside the Box Score
Susquehanna scored seven runs on six hits with one error while first-year Aidan Martin (Washington Township, N.J./Bergen Catholic) limited the Royals to a run on three hits. Scranton stranded seven runners on base to the River Hawks' three.
 
Top Performers
Morrow went 2-for-3 with a season-best four RBI and a double while Veit and Roumes each scored two runs. Martin went the distance in improving to 2-0 on the season as he struck out a season-high four batters.
 
Three different Royals had a single while James Gadue (2-1) was saddled with the loss after walking five in 4.2 innings of work.
 
GAME 2
How It Happened
The Royals scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back in posting an 8-0 run in the night cap. Kevin Johnson's one-out grand slam highlighted Scranton's first inning action.
 
Scranton tacked on a seventh run in third with a bases loaded hit by pitch while the eighth run came in the seventh with a score on a wild pitch.
 
Inside the Box Score
The River Hawks were held to a season-low two hits and were shutout for the first time since an 8-0 shutout loss to No. 15 Marietta College on March 13, 2020, down in Florida. Scranton put up eight runs on 10 hits with no errors.
 
Top Performers
Senior Peter Yarem (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood) and Veit each had a hit for Susquehanna while sophomore Landon Ness (York, Pa./Central York) was charged with the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season after 0.1 innings of action on the mound.
 
John Zarnowski, Tyler Kirsten, and Johnson each had two hits for the Royals while Johnson finished with four RBI and scored two runs. Thomas Plunkett (1-0) scattered two hits in going the distance for his first collegiate win of the season with four strikeouts.
